Dear Families of 3rd, 4th, and 5th Graders,

The Indiana Department of Education has replaced the ISTEP+ for Grades 3-8 with a new assessment called ILEARN. The ILEARN summative assessment measures student achievement and student growth according to Indiana Academic Standards. At the elementary level, the ILEARN will assess academic standards for English/Language Arts and Mathematics in Grades 3,4, and 5. In addition, the assessment will assess academic standards for Social Studies in Grade 5 and Science in Grade 4.

The ILEARN assessment differs from the previous ISTEP+ assessment in several ways. The Indiana Department of Education provides information for families as well as an overview of the ILEARN (LINK) assessment on their website. On the back of this letter, please find a document that gives 5 Key Points for Families to Understand About Indiana’s New Assessment.

The ILEARN assessment window is from April 22-May 17, 2019. We will schedule testing days within the window and inform you of those days at that time in the spring. As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact me. Your child’s teacher is always available to answer any questions or provide support to you in helping your child succeed academically. We will continue to work together as parents, teachers, and staff to ensure our students continue to put forth their best effort daily to reach their highest academic potential in the classroom as well as on the new assessment.

This year, Parent Teacher Conferences will be held on November 1st and 8th. We will be scheduling these in a couple of weeks.  For 4th and 5th grade parents, we will have available your child’s ISTEP+ scores from last year for you to review.

In Partnership,

Mrs. Leigh A. Barnes

JSE Principal
